Cricket in America?
While cricket is an important part of a number of cultures, it is the second most played and followed sport in the world. It is popular throughout Europe, Africa, Asia, the Middle East, South America and across the Caribbean. Interestingly, the games roots run deep in North America too. The first international cricket match in history was played between Canada and America in August 1840. There is also evidence that cricket was played as early as 1709 along the banks of the James River in Virginia. Evidence also indicates that George Washington's troops played the game of "wickets" at Valley Forge during the summer of 1778.
Cricket in the United States grew in popularity through World War I, and hosted many matches with touring teams from England and Australia. After World War I, baseball, whose roots can be directly traced to cricket, became the national pastime.Over the last several decades, cricket has seen a resurgence in its popularity in America. Today there are more than three hundred clubs with a pool of over 10,000 players across the United States.
Cricket is a wonderfully social sport, full of passion and sportsmanlike competitiveness. Unlike some other team sports, once basic knowledge and skills of cricket have been attained, it can be played throughout ones lifetime, regardless of age, athleticism or gender. Cricket clubs and leagues are growing and developing throughout the United States. There are even plans to establish a professional league in the near future and to co-host future World Cup matches with the West Indies.
We hope you will share our enthusiasm for this wonderful sport!
